ATLANTA (WFLA) — The Facilities for Disease Control and Prevention is trying to keep an eye on the emergence of a new, hugely transmissible variant of COVID-19 discovered in South Africa.

The CDC claimed that “if” this variant — acknowledged as the omicron variant — emerges in the U.S., it is predicted to be recognized “quickly.”

“No situations of this variant have been recognized in the U.S. to date,” the CDC wrote in a statement issued Friday. “CDC is pursuing the aspects of this new variant, to start with noted to the WHO by South Africa. We are grateful to the South African federal government and its experts who have brazenly communicated with the worldwide scientific community and continue to share information about this variant with the U.S. Division of Health and fitness and Human Expert services and CDC. We are performing with other U.S. and worldwide public health and market partners to master more about this variant, as we continue on to monitor its route.

“CDC is continuously checking variants and the U.S. variant surveillance method has reliably detected new variants in this country. We assume Omicron to be identified swiftly, if it emerges in the U.S.”

The CDC manufactured the announcement soon immediately after the Earth Well being Firm (WHO) classified the omicron variant, or B.1.1.529, as a Variant of Concern. Wellbeing experts say the variant’s mutated properties authorized it to spread promptly among the more youthful men and women, resulting in COVID-19 ranges in South Africa to spike rapidly immediately after a period of time of very low growth.

This kind of worries pushed the United States and European Union to enact a vacation ban from South Africa and other nations to contain the virus. Nevertheless, authorities say these bans will never cease the virus from reaching the West.

“Travel limits can delay but not prevent the spread of a very transmissible variant,” explained Mark Woolhouse, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of Edinburgh, in a report by the Associated Press.

In the meantime, the CDC continues to urge mask-putting on, social-distancing, and vaccinations to protect against COVID-19 variants. Vacationers to the U.S.
